My girlfriend's laptop died a few weeks back, so now we have a new laptop. But it came with Vista. Did anyone else get Vista yet? It looks great, much better than I thought it would. But I'm not that interested in how it looks. The current configuration isn't broken, so why fix it. I'll keep XP on 'till I buy something new. That might take up to three years unless there's some multi core or Vista-hungry app. -- Danny.

It looks alright though, but I switched it to Classic Mode within 10 minutes or so. Just as we had with XP really. It looks alright though, but I switched it to Classic Mode > within 10 minutes or so. Just as we had with XP really. Well, I did that too. Then it also dawned on me that it looks very familiar under the hood. That's actually a good thing, but it's not the promised revolution except for some graphical stuff. > Also, it seems to have more than half of the c-drive directories set > to hidden, for some reason. Oh my god, I might delete win.com and then > accidently format C:... You *never* did that? I actually had to scramble once when someone I knew said "I got to delete this virus file, because some e-mail said so". Sure enough it was a hoax that made people delete some system file. I had received something similar years earlier but I decided not to delete the thing but to move it. I ended up putting it back via DOS. Other fun mishaps: The computer won't start: they used the extension cord button to shut down the PC. I had used the button on the PC the previous time, so now starting with the extension cord button wouldn't work... I've installed this fun program that puts smileys in e-mails, but now my PC is slow and my e-mail doesn't work. How do you mean remove that program? But I like the smileys! All my friends have them... After re-installing XP and choosing the correct keyboard driver: "Ooh, all the images on the PC now match the letters on the keyboard. I'll have to learn the whole keyboard anew now." I suspected I had a virus. There was this pop-up that told me so. But it should be gone now I installed that program... How do I get that funny character that's in the middle of an e-mail? My friend from the chatroom told me to sign up for SMS-chatting since it's for free. Actual cost: something like 50ct a message that gets sent to you. It's free for the people that send you messages from the chat room. But how to cancel? I don't understand English, so I just click OK. What do you mean spyware? I didn't do that. It must have been the kids. When the Windows Genuine Advantage started showing up: I don't care what my Windows says. It isn't illegal. I got it from the guy from the shop down the street. He put it on my PC for free since we're such good customers. I've had to say "Don't touch the computer 'till I get there" too often. -- Danny.

The result is even worse. The drive fills up, I have to come round and clean it up, but I have no idea which files they want to keep and what programs must stay on the drive. So I end up sitting side by side with them doing a task they could easily do themselves. > The worst thing I ever had to do was the following. My sister is good about connecting cables, but she won't open the damn thing up. She had moved the PC and dislodged the video-card. It took me a hour to get there and push it in half a centimeter... Another nice one: hardware that doesn't work and nobody, including the helpdesk, believes you. Because it sorta half works. Now it does, now it doesn't. They want you to wait till the warranty is gone and it has totally fried. Meanwhile you're stuck downloading drivers. Also a lot of fun: fixing the computer whilst having to look after the kids that are looming over you, running off with gear, roughhousing and so on. Just so the parents can go out for a smoke. It takes you at least twice as long to fix stuff when you've got people looking over your shoulder or you're trying to not get them electrocuted. -- Danny.

Vista seems to be having a pretty bad press right now and I'm hoping it's a long time before companies take it up, because I am trying to get into IT and doing XP-based certification and I don't want to have to learn Vista.

Though mostly it's not the internet. Not right now at least. Try Youtube (or any video or flash) on a Pentium II or III. You may run into trouble. Certainly with anything slower. The most important reason for a higher specs system is simple: it has to be prepared for things to come. Upgrading the system is over most peoples heads. Yet they expect a PC last 5 years if not a lifetime (it should because it's so darn expensive). And the kids are bound to come home with some game or other software that won't run on anything that's two years old. I wonder how fast a computer needs to be to run Youtube, flash, antivirus, XVID, XP and some other stuff decently, mostly simultaneously. It can certainly be done on a 1Ghz machine. But anything lower than that and CPU, chipset, memory, videocard and what have you may become dealbreakers. Financially it doesn't make much sense to go for specs that low. A 2Ghz PC would be hardly more expensive and would last you longer. > | The most important reason for a higher specs system is simple: it has to > | be prepared for things to come. Say a laptop lasts you 3 years and you buy a half decent one for 600 euro's, then you spend 200 a year. Longer use is just profit on the write off. Of course, if the 100 dollar laptop heads our way too (if it appears at all, that is), you might actually be better off buying a new machine every year. Throwaway laptops, imagine that. -- Danny.
