I'm sorry I know I must seem really old fashioned but I'm still playing at
Monkey 2 (we're a bit late in Europe) and I've got a problem, if anyone did
the game and remembers it, here it is : I'm at the cottage at Phatt Island
  I used the telescope with the monkey statue and put the mirror at its
place in the house but it was'nt of any help. I still don't know what to do
when the guy goes and get the glass of rum
  I also saw the whole in the cliff down the cottage but I don't know what
to do with it

What can I do ?

You need to swap the rum with something that's a bit `lighter` in your
inventory. But make sure you empty the mug of rum somewhere in the room
first. You must win the drinking contest in order for the
telescope/mirror thing to work and you'll need to open a hatch by the
door.
