I'm assuming you are playing Monkey Island 3!
Use one of the books that you have, it tells you what you need to make a
compass that you either have already or can search for on Blood Island.

    ok, to make the compas, you have to use the measuring cup with
sea water, then you have to get something magnetic (magnetize something to
make the arrow)
and last something to keep the arrow (like a cork)
