Hi,
I'm getting back into Duke after many years, and have some new questions.
How can my friend and I connect to play Duke? The modem list in the game is
horribly out-dated. How can I get the game to recognize a 56k modem? Is
there a way to use a TCP/IP connection to play Duke3D? I have a cable modem
now, I don't even know how to start. Whatever happened to all the different
Windows launchers (I remember one was called Duke Manager 98), is there one
still available that is better than the others? I tried to see what kind of
frame rate I was getting, so I typed in DNRATE and didn't see anything.
What did I do wrong? I have an old P120, 32MB ram, 2MB video ram laptop
with Win98 that I'm dedicating to old DOS games, especially Duke. Are there
any ways I can tweak my system to get the most out of Duke. Thanks for your
time.
Doug

Possibly typed it too fast, or the game just missed a key. It
sometimes happens. You can try typing it more deliberately. What I
do is pause the game first, then type DNRATE.

You can try Dukester X for multiplayer, it works with both JonoF's and
Rancidmeat's Win32 ports - although I'm not sure if it works with the
original game, if that's what you're playing. Even so, it's easy to get
JonoF's port up and running, and it's compatible with Win98 anyway.

IMO DukeRoch is the best... you can select your episode/user map/saved game,
as well as skill setting... and also set up fake multiplayer.
Plus it's got an inbuilt .grp file 'explorer' thingy which is pretty neat.
You can get it from here:

If your resolution is very high then the frame rate display is sometimes too
small to see clearly - it should be in the top left corner of your screen,
in white.
At least that's where it is in JonoF's port... :-)

It's a great idea... although there are now ways of getting Duke to run on
WinXP in hi-res modes and sound, and supporting OpenGL rendering... ;-)

This is the way to play:
http://jonof.edgenetwork.org/buildport/duke3d/
as recomended by the guy who wrote the origional build engine for Duke3D:
http://www.advsys.net/ken/build.htm

Just put the executables in your Duke3d directory. Run Setup.exe to
configure then run the duke3d.exe and away you go with OpenGL support,
Windows sound and networking. I ma playing all the levels again, it's great.
