READ THIS if you know about ETHERNET

I've been told that two computers connected by ethernet cards won't run
multiplayer games any faster than two computers connected by a null modem
cable. Considering the much higher data transfer rate of ethernet, I don't
believe it, but can anyone confirm whether or not this is true (so I won't
waste my money)?

Sorry for the crosspost, but this is appropriate for all the groups and I
figured this was the best way to get a response...

Well, I have an Ethernet card, and I connect directly to a person
downstairs from me all the time. It's as crisp as playing by
yourself. Never once experienced any lag at all. I know that playing
over a null modem can sometimes lag, especially in places that are
very high detail, or there are a lot of weapons or spheres around and
stuff like that. Ethernet is the way to go.

Not true, but the difference is more visible in some games. Quake
runs much better over ethernet than null-modem. On the other hand,
you won't notice much a boost in duke.

It's really dependent on the needs of the game. Some games have been
optimized for 9600, 57600 etc.

You can grab yourself a taiwanese ethernet card for under $30. It's
worth it just for moving files around if you don't use it regularly
for games.

Stop by my web page if you have any further questions.

I agree with Charlie's experience; you should see Descent w/ethernet.
blows Kali away, big time.

However, I think if the game is not designed to take advantage of
good hardware, you could end up wasting good ethernet cards on it.

However, however, those games probably wouldn't be worth playing!

Ethernet can be kind of considered a rich man's toy, I guess, but
damn, it's nice...

Rich man's toy? You can get a crappy ethernet card (which still blows away any
modem on the planet) for $35 or less!

I have a ethernet (10baseT) network at home and a 14.4k modem. The
ethernet network doesn't seem any faster than the 14.4k modem (or serial
link) for various multi-player games. However, if you want more than
2-player capacity then you have to go with ethernet!

Rich? Hardly. Cheap BNC cards run for $50 or less in all the catalogs I
get. Nothing for great performance (they ain't no Intel cards) but
they're a full 10Mbps. BNC cabling is pretty cheap too.

Last I checked, decent 28.8 modems were running $150. Figure you can only
use two of those per DukeMatch game (total $300), compared with about
$60 for each of up to 8 users on a network DukeMatch... it's obviously
cheaper to go with the network.

Yeah... you can get your budget 28.8 modems for $100 and your El Cheapo
14.4 modems for $40. But they aren't anything for quality. I made the
mistake of buying a Prometheus 14.4 about a year ago... it sucked shit
and kept dying on me. I finally torched it. Better to go with something
that you know is good. My Supra 28.8 PnP works wonderfully.

Enjoy,

Where i live there is a place called the Impact Gaming Center where they have completely
networked computers, top of the line, 12 i think, anyways, they also have the latist
games, with there networking hardware it is easy to appreciate the multi-player effect!
I pitty those who do not have such a place to crawl to and urge them to start or look
into one, the place I know of is making a killing, Plus, all there computer stuff is a
Tax write off

Because of this ability we play faster and more often then most people in the country
and i would just like to say, we truly have a league of our own, if you are ever in IL
come in and stop by for a quick ass-wupin

That's all for now, Mojo

It only cost me $20 for my network combo card and it runs very well...
In fact 2 friends bought them at the sametime and it only cost a few
bucks to get the cables and terminators... I agree it's well worth it
if you have some computers near each other. Blows away null modem and
modem connections... Plus there is a cool program that you can use to
transfer files back and forth to all the computers; real simply to use
and only requires the standard generic network drivers, works in
DOS.... We transferred all our Doom wads and stuff in under a minute
and we're talking LOTS of bytes here... Faster than transferring with
floppies and makes modem transfers a joke. I think it was transferring
the data at roughly 300k a second or something; not bad, eh?

Yep, and, you then need two of them, and another computer to put the
other in. You can't _really_ play much of a network game with one
computer.

Well, yes... but if you have friends who want to play H2H, generally
	they have a computer.

Two of my friends own systems of comparable power, and each has
purchased their own network card. Somewhere we scrounged some
cable and terminators, and on Friday nights (much to our SO's
dismay) we meet at one of our houses, hauling around our whole
	systems.

We then spend about an hour setting things up (and drinking
beer!), and then play 'till 3AM or so.... great fun! We've been doing
this since Falcon 3.0 came out, and we recruited another for a 4some
when DOOM appeared. Duke will breath new life into the weekly 'death'
	session once again!! :)

Point is, we didn't spend more than $60 or so per person for this
much fun. We got the network drivers from work, and one of us just
had the cables lieing around. True, you might have to buy some
cables, but if each person get's thier own, it still only adds
about $10 to the cost. That, and the hassle of lugging around desktop
systems, with all the speakers, mice, joysticks, etc. every Friday!!

	:)
