A power vr card is one that uses Nec's powervrx2 chipset. There are currently 3 cards that i know of that use it. Integraph 5d, integraph 3dx (the x is important), and Matrox M3D, the M3D is the least expensive of the three, pricing at $99.00 in U.S. funds. It supports microsoft direct3d, powersgl, the "opengl" miniport used in quake, quake2 and hexen2, and I believe Heidi. If the Game you saw said it was "powervr extreme" or "powersgl" it probably wont run on a 3dfx card, and will need one of the VR cards to run. The vr cards have enjoyed a much larger market penetration in Japan, than they have in the US. As a result some games that have been written in Japan are just now making it to our shores. Such as a powersgl version of resident evil, and Moon racer. Games like moon racer are available in a VR version only, at this time. Nec has made some multimillion dollar developement deals with some of the software houses recently, in a hope to address the lack of vr specific program. In all fairness though, for running glquake the 3dfx card offers higher frame rates. If that is your main concern stick with a voodoo card. Last benchmarks I saw, showed that the powervr cards had higher microsoft direct3d scores (than the voodoo cards). hope ive hopelessly confused you.
