I'm sick and tired of hearing the software game companies constant
whining about their software being stolen and distributed and all that
jazz. 90% of the games I see have the little colorful banner screen
after you quit to dos, shaming you into registering, implying that
everyone pirates. What kind of sales are they trying to make here??? I
think it is rude and pointless. For example, Wolfenstien 3D. That
quit-to-dos banner talking about piracy, unintelligently related to an
empty hard drive, can really discourage iD's customers from buying more
useless video games. And, ha! Look at Quake's banner! "Congratulations,
you are probably not a thief." Huhhh??? Now, I challenge anyone to reply
with a logical explination on what they are trying to say. Anyway, let's
just cut to the chase here. Blizzard Entertainment is a smart company.
S..M..A..R..T! Just look at what they did with Diablo. Adding 60 megs or
so worth of non-data junk to the end of the big 500 meg file, to make it
uncopyable, was a stroke of genius. Sure, sure. Mabye you can get a
program to copy it, but first of all, who would want to waste 600 megs
of hard disk space and besides, even if they had enough space, most
pirates would be too lazy to copy all that info. So, anyway, you can
never eliminate piracy, but with a little smart thinking the way
blizzard did, it can be drastically reduced. So, if you don't want your
games stolen, get your act together and do something about it!
