1 This FAQ
==========

1.1 Where to get this FAQ
----------------------------

The latest version will be posted to alt.games.duke3d every now and then,
but I am also going to make it available to download from my website at
www.pacifist.co.uk for anybody who wants it... The website one may
occasionally be a revision behind the newsgroup posting, since I do it
afterwards and tend to forget....

1.2 The idea behind this FAQ
-------------------------------

This FAQ is a compilation of my knowledge, concise versions of posts to the
newsgroup and some help from 3D Realms. Please take note that this is NOT an
FAQ about Duke Nukem 3D. It just covers the topics most frequently mentioned
on the newsgroup. A lot of posts in alt.games.duke3d are about the same
topic, and this FAQ makes it better because 1) People with a frequent
question don't have to wait for a reply and 2) It keeps the total number of
messages down, making it easier to read....
Except for category 9, all Q&As refer to the PC version

1.3 Contact details for ideas and suggestions
------------------------------------------------

I can be contacted at web@pacifist.co.uk regarding ideas, suggestions,
comments or whatever about this FAQ, or just to ask a question about Duke.
Good questions will be added to the next update of the FAQ

1.4 Thanks
-------------
Thanks to Bruce A Benko for his secrets guide
Thanks to Stewart for his Atomic-CD patch
Thanks to Colin Snover for his guide to Win2k/XP issues (
http://vogons.zetafleet.com/ )
Thanks to 3D Realms for releasing the source! Yay!

1.5 Where can I download Duke?
---------------------------------

www.amishrakefight.org/gfy/ is frequently suggested by regulars of agd...

2 Introduction to Duke and gameplay questions
===========================================

2.1 History of Duke Nukem
----------------------------

Duke Nukem 3D is the third in a series of Duke Nukem games by Apogee/3D
Realms. The first two were simple side-ways platform shoot-'em-ups, but Duke
3D is a first-person action game. It stars, believe it or not, Duke Nukem!
If you want to
know anymore, download the shareware version from www.3drealms.com. It was
the first of it's kind to offer true 3D (I.e. room-over-room, unlike Doom)
and for the first time, the main character talks! It was also the first to
offer 'environmental' features, like earthquakes and cracks, something which
even Quake didn't beat! See also "Duke's Future"

If you want to play shareware versions of the first Dukes, have a look on
www.3drealms.com

2.2 What versions of Duke are there?
---------------------------------------

Duke shareware is all versions up to 1.2
Duke 1.3D is the original version, with three episodes. This is no longer
available from 3D Realms
Duke 1.4 is the original version of Duke, with the Plutonium Pack addon
installed
Duke 1.5 is called "Atomic Duke" and is the same as 1.4, but with a few bug
fixes

1.3D+Plutonium pak=1.4
1.3D+Plutonium pak+Patch=1.5
Atomic Duke=1.5

The patch is here http://www.pacifist.co.uk/duke/ppak15.zip

You can only buy Atomic Duke now from 3D Realms, but you may be able to find
other versions elsewhere. If it comes in a pack with something else, it's
PROBABLY Atomic Duke. The version number is mentioned on the red bar when
starting Duke

2.3 Where can I get Duke?
----------------------------

www.3drealms.com or any good store
You could also try eBay, or get a copy of PC Gamer from May 2001, where they
gave away version 1.3D

2.4 Where can I get shareware Duke?
--------------------------------------

www.3drealms.com

The Mac version can be found at
http://www.wizardworks.com/macsoft/?page=demos

2.5 Where can I get official add-ons?
---------------------------------------

The only official addon is the Plutonium pak, from 3D Realms. It includes an
improved Build engine, an extra episode, new aliens, a new weapon and better
CON files which enable you to do things like change the Episode Names, which
couldn't be done in the original. If you get this, remember to apply the
1.4->1.5 patch
There are also some "official" patches from Wizardworks, they are Nuclear
Winter, Duke in the Caribbean, Duke it out in DC and Duke!Zone 500 levels.
The last two are available in a special pack with an interactive CD about
Duke

2.6 Why are there no monsters?
---------------------------------

You probably have a multiplayer DMO file in the Duke directory. Remove or
rename it

2.7 Does Duke have an official 3DFX, OpenGL, DirectX patch?
--------------------------------------------------------------

Nothing official, although since the source has been released, people are
working on various projects, some of which are Windows versions of Duke. See
catagory 11

2.8 Why won't adult mode turn on?
------------------------------------

Open DUKE3D.CFG. Look for a line which says ENVIRONMENT="whatever". Your
password is whatever. If there is no line, or it's empty, you probably
bought a restricted version. In this case, download one of these patches
ftp://ftp.3drealms.com/patches/ozpatch.zip
ftp://ftp.3drealms.com/patches/dnsepat.exe

2.9 I can't get the door to the submarine open!
--------------------------------------------------

Go up to the cells and look behind a poster in one of the rooms

2.10 Where can I get the patch to play the Atomic edition without the CD?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since a patched EXE can't be legally distributed, you will have to patch it
yourself. This BASIC program should do it:

OPEN "DUKE3D.EXE" FOR BINARY AS 1
DIM Byte AS STRING * 1
GET #1, 556948, Byte
SELECT CASE ASC(Byte)
  CASE 132
    Byte = CHR$(42)
    PUT #1, 556948, Byte
    PRINT "Success!"
  CASE 42
    PRINT "It's already done!"
  CASE ELSE
PRINT "Error - Not modifying file."
END SELECT
CLOSE
PRINT "Done."

2.11 What's Lameduke?
-----------------------

Lameduke is basically Duke Nukem 3D Beta, a snapshot of what the game was
like a year or so before it was released. You can download it here

http://www.pacifist.co.uk/duke/lameduke.zip

For more information, visit the EXCELLENT site at

Go here http://www.cygnusloop.com/lameduke/

2.12 How do I invert the mouse?
---------------------------------

In Duke Atomic or Plutonium (1.4/1.5), select Invert Mouse from the mouse
setup menu
In Duke 1.3, go to the setup program, controller setup, advanced controller
setup, advanced mouse setup. Select the Y axis and change it from +1.0
to -1.0 (If it is currently at 1.0. If not, substitute). Make sure you save

2.13 Why can't I press certain key combinations?
--------------------------------------------------

Cheap keyboard probably. Try another one or change your configuration till
you find one which works...

3 Incompatibilities and patches
===============================

3.1 Why doesn't Duke work in Windows 2000/Me/XP
--------------------------------------------------

Because the NT-kernel isn't based over DOS. It's an emulation which isn't
100% perfect. See Appendix 1 and question 11.5

3.2 Why don't I get any sound under Windows 2000/Me/XP
---------------------------------------------------------

Because the NT-kernel never included emulation for DOS sound. See Appendix 1
and question 11.5

3.3 Why can't I access VESA modes under Windows 2000/Me/XP
-------------------------------------------------------------

Because the NT-kernel never included emulation for VESA modes.... See
Appendix 1 and question 11.5

3.4 Why does Duke crash when I enter a sewer level?
Why does Atomic Duke crash as soon as it loads (Win 9x)
--------------------------------------------------------------

Some Soundblaster Live! cards don't work well with the echoing sound
produced by Duke (Atomic Edition opens with a demo in the sewer). Get a
patch from http://www.advsys.net/ken/build.htm

3.5 Why doesn't my mouse work?
---------------------------------

DOS doesn't support mice by default. Get a TSR for it, such as
www.pacifist.co.uk/duke/mouse.zip - Note this won't work with USB mice

3.6 Why doesn't my CD drive work?
------------------------------------

DOS doesn't support CD-ROM drives by default. How to get them to work is
really beyond the scope of this FAQ, but have a look at
http://bochs.sourceforge.net/doc/docbook/user/x1112.htm

3.7 Why won't the Plutonium pack install, complaining of low memory?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

It's a bug in the installer which affects machines with 64Mb of memory or
more. Get the patch from www.pacifist.co.uk/duke/ppak15.zip . Run the setup
in the patch, not the one on the CD. Version 1.5 will be installed

3.8 Why does Duke Nuc Winter/Caribbean/in DC/Zone crash with "Runtime
error 200"?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------

Because Wizardworks used an instruction which doesn't work properly with
CPUs faster than about 300Mhz. Get Moslo from
www.pacifist.co.uk/duke/moslo.zip and use it before you run setup. Or you
can just patch the game from
http://www.ina-support.com/faq/dukeitoutindcdownloads_pc.asp

3.9 Why do I get a "Granular error" or whatever it is?
---------------------------------------------------------

Probably a corrupt map file, or it's an Atomic map and you're running on the
original Duke..Also this could happen if you're trying to get it to run
under Win2k/XP. Try switching off sound. If that works, consider a bootdisk

3.10 How do I make a bootdisk?
--------------------------------

Get a Windows 98 bootdisk from www.bootdisk.com and boot using that. Your
hard drive must be formatted to FAT or FAT32 and *not* NTFS for this to work
properly. Then change to your hard drive and run Duke that way. Some sound
cards (and most Creative) need a driver installing to get them to work. This
will have to be added by hand, and is beyond the scope of this FAQ. If you
can get this to work properly, it will pretty much guarantee Duke works on
your PC. However, it is awkward since you have to restart your PC to play.
Also consider a dual-boot if you know how to do that. See also 3.5 and 3.6

3.11 Why am I having problems running Duke in Windows 95/98?
--------------------------------------------------------------

See if this helps:

http://rtcm.thecomitatus.com/knowledge-base/documents-online/setup-windows-b
uildgames.html

4 Build
=======

4.1 Where can I get build?
-----------------------------

Build is on your CD in the GOODIES directory. Also, check out eDuke at
http://www.saettler.com/eduke/

4.2 Why won't Build go into 3D mode?
---------------------------------------

You must copy all the build files into your Duke directory and make sure
they aren't read only before running Build. "ATTRIB *.* -r -h -s" might do
the trick... Also make sure you are in valid player space.. (the brown arrow
must be inside a box. Read the help file...)

4.3 Why don't most of the controls in the Build setup do anything?
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Because this is the setup originally used by Duke before they made the new
one. The only thing that has any effect is the screenmode setup... See
Ken-build at http://www.advsys.net/ken/build.htm for more info

4.4 How do I use KEXTRACT and KGROUP
---------------------------------------

Try typing /? after the program and see what it says...

4.5 How do I get started with Build?
---------------------------------------

Use space to lay corners of walls. An enclosed white area is valid player
space. Press ENTER on the keypad to go between 2D and 3D mode. Press S to
lay a sprite. Press V twice in 3D mode to change the texture. Press T and H
to set sector lo and hitags. Use the same with Alt to set sprite tags. A
sector effectors tag determines what it does. Use insert to add vertices.
Join vertices with space to split sectors. Anything else, find a guide on
the internet...oh look: http://dukertcm.totalconversions.com/

4.6 I've designed a level for Duke. What now?
------------------------------------------------

Post it to alt.games.duke3d.binaries for us to look at it, then when you
think it is ready, distribute it to any Duke sites you can find

4.7 How do I get access to the files in the original Duke?
-------------------------------------------------------------

Type BUILD E1L1.map to get straight to level one. For better practice
though, use KEXTRACT to get at all the map files

5 Addons
========

5.1 How are MAP files run?
-----------------------------

DUKE3D -map map.map . This only works on the registered version though. You
can also name it E1L1.map then it will load on the first episode....You can
also use setup to load them...

5.2 How are usermaps with extra files run?
---------------------------------------------

Generally, they come with instructions. New ART files 0-13 replace existing
tiles, so remove them when you have finished

5.3 How are total conversions run?
-------------------------------------

They nearly always come with a BAT file to run them. If they don't, they
probably can be accessed by just running Duke after you have extracted it
into the Duke directory, although it may be wise to make a copy of the Duke
directory first

5.4 How are new artwork files used?
--------------------------------------

Just put them in the Duke directory. Tiles 0-13 contain tiles that will
replace existing ones within the game. Tiles 14+ are only ever used in user
maps...

5.5 Why won't Duke Nuclear Winter/Caribbean/in DC/Zone install?
------------------------------------------------------------------

See 3.8

6 Cheats and secrets
====================

6.1 What are the cheat codes to Duke?
----------------------------------------

DNKROZ God Mode
DNCORNHOLIO God mode. Same as DNKROZ
DNSTUFF All weapons, ammo, keys and items
DNWEAPONS All weapons and ammo
DNITEMS All items such as Steroids
DNHYPER Steroids
DNKEYS All keys
DNCLIP Clipping off. Don't enter "null-space" (I.e. go
                through a white line)
DNBETA Says something I think we all agree with
DNALLEN Says "Buy Major Stryker"

If you add 1 to the skill level you want (eg Damn I'm Good is 4, and use
that, then that should work properly

6.2 Where are all the secrets in the first episode?
6.3 Where are all the secrets in the second episode?
6.4 Where are all the secrets in the third episode?
6.5 Where are all the secrets in the Atomic episode?

The guy at http://www.babtech.com/duke3d.html has given me permission to
link to his secrets guide. They're somewhere near the bottom of the page. I
only thought it fair to not link directly to them....

8 Duke Online/Multiplayer
=========================

8.1 Where can I get Duke maps?
---------------------------------

alt.games.duke3d.binaries. See also the question below

8.2 Where can I get Duke TCs?
--------------------------------

http://www.totalconversions.com/info/indexes/duke3d/reviews/
http://www.multimania.com/duke3d/eindex.htm
http://duke3d.bigsleep.net/
http://www.planetduke.com/duke3/files/tc_1.shtml
ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/games/PC/3drealms/
ftp://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/vendors/3drealms/
ftp://ftp.southcom.com.au/.4/3drealms/duke3d/
http://www.fragpipe.com/~dukeinc

Duke sites are becoming quite scarce on the Internet now...

8.3 How can I play Duke online?
----------------------------------

Either join an online place like Kali, POGO or MPlayer, or get iCommit

8.4 Where can I get iCommit?
-------------------------------

http://www.pacifist.co.uk/duke/icommit.zip . Run the program and choose
Config. Fill everything in. You're
going to need some IP numbers... they change every time you
connect unless you are on a 24-hour connection, or have a dynamic IP like
www.dyndns.org so post a message
at alt.games.duke3d asking for a game. Choose either Host or Join
and follow the instructions. To get your IP address, go to Start->Run and
type winipcfg for Win9x systems, or ipconfig /all (in a DOS box) for WinNT
systems

8.5 How does iCommit work?
-----------------------------

iC replaces the COMMIT driver included with many of the BUILD games. This
driver is the heart of the multiplayer code. Unlike somewhat generic IPX
emulators such as Kali or Kahn, iC does not emulate an IPX network.
Instead it interfaces directly with the game and sends the packets out over
TCP/IP.

Make sure to see Appendix 1 if you are running Windows NT/2000/Me/XP

8.6 Why won't my modem work in DOS?
--------------------------------------

Because a lot of modems are now made using cheap components, where they let
the CPU do most of the work for them. They are called Winmodems. There are
no DOS drivers which emulate this. There is nothing you can do about it
without getting another modem. I believe an external modem can't be a
winmodem

9 Duke on other platforms
=========================

9.1 Why won't Duke work under *nix, OS/2 etc....
---------------------------------------------------

Because Duke wasn't written for them. A DOS emulator may work...The only
officially supported platforms are DOS 6.22 for the PC version, and Power PC
or 68k for the Mac version...

9.2 What Duke games are available for the Playstation?
---------------------------------------------------------

Land of the Babes http://www.3drealms.com/babes/index.html
Time to Kill http://www.3drealms.com/timetokill/index.html

9.3 What Duke games are available for the N64?
-------------------------------------------------

Zero Hour http://www.3drealms.com/zerohour/index.html

9.4 What else?
-----------------

Duke for the Gameboy http://www.3drealms.com/gameboy/index.html
Duke for the A2600 http://www.3drealms.com/duke4/dnf2600.html

There's also a new one for the GBA which looks quite good. Check the 3D
Realms website for more info

10 The Future of Duke
=====================

10.1 What is the future of Duke?
----------------------------------

Vague. There haven't been many releases on the PC regarding Duke for six
years, with the exception of Manhattan Project and a few addons. The only
product coming out (soon) is Duke Nukem Forever, which we have been waiting
for, for over five years...

With the source code being released, interest has been revived somewhat (See
catagory 11)

10.2 When's Duke forever coming out?
--------------------------------------

"We're confident that DNF will be one of the greatest, if not the greatest,
game of 1998. And this confidence is not misplaced." - Scott Miller, 1997

"Duke Nukem Forever is a 1999 game and we think that timeframe matches very
well with what we have planned for the game." - George Broussard, 1998

"Trust us, Duke Nukem Forever will rock when it comes out next year." - Joe
Siegler, 1999

"When it's done in 2001." - 2000 Christmas card

"DNF will come out before Unreal 2." - George Broussard, 2001

"If DNF is not out in 2001, something's very wrong." - George Broussard,
2001

"DNF will come out before Doom 3." - George Broussard, 2002

http://www.3drealms.com/duke4/index.html

10.3 Why is the Duke Strategy Guide available even though the game isn't?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"It's totally made up, and utterly false. Do not believe it."

10.4 What's Duke - Manhattan Project?
---------------------------------------

Something to do while you're waiting for Duke Nukem:Forever. It plays like
Duke Nukem 2 but with all the style and flair of the latest 3D games. And if
you need another reason to get it, there is a rather natty trailer for Duke
Forever on the CD :)

11 Duke Source Code
===================

11.1 Where can the Duke source be downloaded?
-----------------------------------------------

http://www.apogeegames.com/files/duke3dsource.zip
http://www.3dgamers.com/dl/games/duke3d/Thirdparty/duke3dsource.zip.html
http://www.fileplanet.com/files/120000/121917.shtml
http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=2585
http://www.pcraptor.net/filedb/pafiledb.php?action=file&id=7
http://7thguard.net/files/duke3dsource.zip

Readme available here: http://www.3drealms.com/stuff/duke3dsrc-readme.txt

Please note that you still need a registered version of the game for the GRP
files.... this can be bought at
http://store.yahoo.com/3drealms/duknuk3dated.html or you can try eBay

11.2 Where can the Build source be downloaded?
------------------------------------------------

Check http://www.advsys.net/ken/build.htm for some background stuff and
http://www.advsys.net/ken/buildsrc/default.htm to get it. Please note that
this is NOT the Duke source, as Duke is an extension of the Build engine and
includes many features not present in this...

11.3 Is this for real?
------------------------

Yes, although it was bad timing releasing it around April Fools day....

11.4 What's been done with the source so far?
-----------------------------------------------

Check http://dukenews.fragland.net/portal/ for a good guide. Highlights
include Duke for Linux, OpenDuke, Duke for OpenGL and Duke for Win32....

11.5 What Win32 versions of Duke are currently being worked on?
-----------------------------------------------------------------

http://jonof.edgenetwork.org/buildport/duke3d/
http://www.rancidmeat.com/project.php3?id=1 - this one seems to be current
favourite

See http://dukenews.fragland.net/portal/ for more to try

11.6 How do I use the source?
-------------------------------

The source code is not supported in any way by 3D Realms so you're on your
own in that respect. However, a lively forum has been set-up at

http://forums.3drealms.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=forum;f=25

where fans and programmers are having heated discussions about what can be
done with it...

Appendices
==========

A.1 Windows 2000/XP compatibility problems and solutions
-----------------------------------------------------------

Duke was never intended for running on Windows systems at all. 3D Realms do
not support any problems you may have running it on Windows 9x (95 or 98).
However, it more or less works because both these platforms are still based
on DOS, and the Windows component is just a shell. Users running Windows
2000 or XP (And to a degree, Me) are unfortunate because these OSs are based
on Windows NT, which is not based on DOS. The DOS-mode in these OSs is
actually an emulation. Windows NT's achilles heel when it comes to running
DOS programs is also what gives it its great stability over previous
flavours of Windows: it does not allow programs direct hardware access, so
nothing is allowed to take over control of your hardware and cause it to
sieze up...

First of all, there are cases of an unsupported assembly command being sent
to the VDM (NT DOS emulator) which causes random crashes in Duke on 2k/XP.
The program which attempts to fix this is CLI2NOP available from
http://vogons.zetafleet.com - this changes all the unsupported commands
(CLIs) to NOP (No operation instructions). Windows XP has an undocumented
call that can be made that allows these instructions to execute properly.
Hence, it is of more use for Windows 2k users

Sound
-----

The most common problem people have is lack of sound. The NT operating
system never supported sound in DOS boxes, so this has to be emulated as
well. The program to do this is VDMSound and is available from
http://ntvdm.cjb.net - install this. You should also install update1 from
the same place. If you don't feel like doing everything by hand, you might
want to get VDMSLaunchpad 1.0.0.7 as well, from
http://vdmsound.sourceforge.net/files/

Install VDMsound then update1. Unzip launchpad and run INSTALL.BAT.
Right-click on the DUKE3D executable and choose the "Run with VDMS" option
that has a musical note icon next to it. Go to the "Advanced" options. Go to
the "Troubleshooting" tab and check "Custom Configuration". Insert this into
that box:

[VDMServicesProvider.config]
fixPOPF = 1

Click OK and save this configuration. Now, whenever you want to play Duke
Nukem 3D, double-click the DUKE3D.VLP file. You will also have the hassle of
matching up the emulated address/IRQ/DMA/Type with the one Duke is
expecting. Don't you miss the good old days?

Also take note that Windows XP has an inferior Soundblaster emulator on
IRQ5, whereas VDMSound runs on IRQ7, so make sure you select the right
setting. If the sound quality has been set too highly, the game may run
slowly and the sound may crack. 22khz 16-bit stereo with 6 voices is
recommended

Vesa
----

Duke isn't much cop running in 320x200, but those elusive VESA modes seem to
cause major headaches for 2k/XP/Me. A lot of major graphics card companies
have removed VESA support from their drivers. So, what you want to do is:

Get NOLFB.COM and unzip to Duke direcory http://www.advsys.net/ken/build.htm

This reports the VESA version as 1.2 instead of 2.0 or 3.0. Therefore Linear
Frame Buffering is disabled and allows the game to run properly... To run
Duke, you should open a DOS-box, run NOLFB and then immediately run Duke
afterwards. However, if you have installed VDMS there is an easier way. Go
back to the Advanced option (see SOUND) and in the AUTOEXEC.NT box add
C:\GAMES\DUKE3D\NOLFB.COM Or wherever you have put it. Then save again

This SHOULD get Duke working. If VESA still isn't working, then the drivers
for your graphics card probably don't include VESA support. Try asking your
supplier. Note that Scitech Display Doctor isn't very comfortable on
NT-systems and may cause more trouble than it's worth....

iCommit
-------

Networking isn't 100% perfect in DOS-emulation either. This has a tendancy
to stop iCommit from working, and AFAIK no-one has come up with a suitable
solution yet.....

Be sure to see question 11.5...
