THE ANSWERS

That's because Duke was never designed to be run in Windows. Run it in pure
DOS mode instead. 3D Realms will not offer any support if you try and run it
Windows. Of course, you have to do that to use ICommit....

You're lucky it even loads. Run it in DOS

2) I need a copy of Build because my CD got scratched

Nice try. If it REALLY didn't come with Build (some versions didn't),
contact GT Interactive at www.gtinteractive.com . If you don't even HAVE a
CD, don't expect to be treated kindly by us OR 3D Realms

3) I lent by Duke CD to a friend who broke it. Can anyone send me a ZIPPED
version?

That's even worse. We ARE NOT ALLOWED BY FEDERAL LAW to distribute Duke3d,
no matter how old it is. If you want the shareware version, go to
www.3drealms.com. P.S. Someone wanted to know why I mentioned Federal Law
when I live in the UK. Two reasons:

a) In the UK we still have laws......

b) Most people who read this are American anyway

3b) But... (insert lame excuse here)

There is no excuse for piracy. Here are some common excuses:

GAMES ARE TOO EXPENSIVE

You're not helping matters much. If a game costs nearly a million to make
(don't laugh, some do), and they sell around 500 copies at $40, that's only
$20,000. Hence another company goes bust and prices go up. Anyway, budget
games get pirated just as much as full-price games....

IT'S NOT WORTH PAYING $70 FOR A MANUAL

(I heard someone say this to me). For a start, games only cost $30-$40, and
after a few weeks that drops to $20. You get more than just a manual. You
get a nice box, support from the company, free upgrades, T-Shirts, lollipops
etc.. and the sense of knowing you did something right

GAMES ARE C**P

Why bother copying them if they're no good?

4) Can anyone send me the Plutonium Pak upgrade?

No. (Okay, I didn't know this at first). Buy it for $5 like everyone else.
Remember, you need Duke 1.3D to run it. If you don't have either, get the
Atomic Edition instead as that is Duke 1.3D with the PPak built in. This is
version 1.5, whereas Duke1.3D+PPak=V1.4 (Unless you download the patch to
v1.5 from 3D Realms. You should get this anyway). Got that? If you're in the
UK, it's a bit of a problem since 3D Realms have discontinued it over here,
so you can't get the PPak OR the Atomic Edition...

This is kind of hard to understand, so here is a summary:

Duke Nukem 3D                 1.3D

Duke 3D+PPak+1.4 patch        1.5

4b) What do you get with the upgrade?

An improved Build engine, which a lot of add-ons and TCs require an extra
episode, two new aliens and (I think) a new weapon. The CON files are
upgraded too, so you can do stuff like change the episode names which you
can't do in 1.3D. I don't think they are backward compatible, so some things
which need 1.3D won't work on 1.4. Usually both versions are provided though

5) Why won't Build go into 3D mode? I just get fuzzy lines and it crashes

Copy all the files to your Duke directory and make sure they aren't read
only. You need to have the GRP file and a mouse driver installed. Next
person to write in saying

Make sure the files aren't read only, then run BSETUP.EXE

6) Why won't Editart work etc....

Copy all the files into the Duke directory, then use kextract to get the DAT
files, the ART files and NAMES.H

6b) How do I use KEXTRACT?

Look, try typing KEXTRACT /? and see what happens...

6c) How do I use KGROUP?

Type KGROUP /? Remember-it won't update archives, just replace them

6d) I haven't got KEXTRACT!

It's in the Build directory on your CD

6e) What is KEXTRACT anyway?

Seperates the individual files from the GRP, like unZIPping something

7) Why won't my mouse work?

Try typing MOUSE or TRMOUSE at the DOS Prompt. If this doesn't work, find
the driver disk which came with your mouse. You did get a driver disk didn't
you? If you didn't, get the standard issue Tremon mouse driver (works with
nearly EVERY mouse) here : www.pacifist.freeserve.co.uk/pacifist/trmouse.zip

7b) How do I use my mouse in Duke3d?

  i) Make sure you have the driver loaded
 ii) In Setup, change the controller type to Keyboard + Mouse
iii) Use the advanced options to change what the buttons do
 iv) Play. Use U to turn mouse aiming on and off

7c) Why won't my CD drive work in DOS?

This could fill a newsgroup with responses. Try typing DOSSTART at the
prompt. If that doesn't get it working, you need to load the driver for your
CD-ROM. It will be called SBIDE.SYS or MITSUMI.SYS or something like that.
Put this line in your CONFIG.SYS

DEVICEHIGH=C:\path goes here\SBIDE.SYS or whatever /D:CD

And put this in your AUTOEXEC.BAT

MSCDEX /d:cd /m:20

If you don't have a driver, get one of these:

(this one is a little different. The command options change depending on
what the drive is plugged into. There is a SETUP.EXE (windows-based) to
auto-config your DOSSTART.BAT)

8) How do you use user-maps?

Type:

DUKE3D -map newmap.map

8b) How do you use new art-work?

Put the ART files in your Duke directory. They will be used automatically in
the game. If they are labelled TILES014.ART or above, they won't actually
appear in the game unless you have a special map which uses them. If no such
map is supplied, they are designed to be used in Build

9) I tried to install the Plutonium Pak but was told I don't have enough

This is a bug in the installer. Download the Version 1.5 patch from 3D
Realms and install from that instead. Okay? So you run the downloaded
program to install the CD, not the one on the CD. Got that? www.3drealms.com

No. Build comes on the CD in the GOODIES/BUILD directory. If it isn't on
your CD, see number 2

I hope you missed all the other parts too..... luckily Poo Poo made a
mistake when he/she/it uploaded them and some parts were corrupted. Is there
anything we can do to stop this from happening again?

13) What's a sector effector?

Read the Build Help file again or get a MAP FAQ from www.dukeworld.com . I
really don't have the time or space to write a full guide to Build, just the
FAQ. Use these to make PHYSICAL effects, such as a crack, an earthquake or a
subway. The LOTAG they are given tells them what to actually do

14) What's this Duke Nukem thing then?

Oh dear.... Duke Nukem 3D is the third in a series of Duke Nukem games by
Apogee/3D Realms. The first two were simple side-ways platform
shoot-'em-ups, but Duke 3D is a first-person action game. It stars, believe
it or not, Duke Nukem! If you want to know anymore, download the shareware
version from www.3drealms.com. It was the first of it's kind to offer true
3D (I.e. room-over-room, unlike Doom) and for the first time, the main
character talks! It was also the first to offer 'environmental' features,
like earthquakes and cracks, something which even Quake didn't beat!

15) Can I have the cheat codes?

DNKROZ          God Mode
DNSTUFF         All weapons, ammo, keys and items
DNWEAPONS       All weapons and ammo
DNITEMS         All items such as Steroids
DNHYPER         Steroids
DNKEYS          All keys
DNCLIP          Clipping off. Don't enter "null-space" (I.e. go through a
white line)
DNBETA          Says something I think we all agree with
DNALLEN         Says "Buy Major Stryker"
DNSCOTTYxyy     Level Skip. X=Episode number Y=Level number
DNSHOWMAP       Fills out the map
DNCORNHOLIO     God mode. Same as DNKROZ
DNRATE          Shows frame rate. Aim for at least 15, with 25 or more being
optimal
DNSKILLx        Alters the skill level. Try numbers from 1 to 5

I know there are more, but they mainly just show different messages

16) I hate Windows 98!

It's not that bad as long as you're not upgrading from an older version...

17) My printer/scanner/modem/digital camera doesn't work!

Then contact the people who made it. Don't tell us. You don't need it for
Duke anyway. Well, except the Modem.

21) Is there a 3DFX patch?

NO! STOP ASKING! Duke3d uses sprites (i.e. pictures drawn in different
places). 3D Cards accelerate polygon based games (i.e. flat, textured
triangle shaped things).3D Realms are not going to continue with Duke 3D.
They are concentrating on Duke Forever, which probably WILL be a polygon
based game. There will not be a patch for Voodoo, Glide, OpenGL, Direct3D,
RIVA, PowerVR or anything like that, unless 3D Realms release the source
code, which they aren't going to do

21b) But Shadow Warrior has a 3DFX patch!

That's not the same. All they've done is map the sprites to a texture. (I.e.
instead of a sprite on the floor, they've put a big flat polygon and painted
the sprite onto it. This makes it run a lot slower, so I wouldn't even
recommend it. Besides, everything looks really blurred and the status bar
corrupts)

22) Oh yeah. When's Duke Forever coming out?

"When It's Finished"
"Soon"
"Sooner than when you last asked"
"You tell me"
"No idea"

22b) But I was told that...

Look, 3D Realms are the only people who know the truth about Duke Forever,
and they haven't released any information other than it'll be out SOON and
will use the Unreal engine.

23) There are no monsters in the game

You either started duke with -m, or you have a multiplayer demo playing on
the title screen. Rename it

24) I can't turn Adult Mode on (I bought Duke from Wal-mart)

Get a patch from 3D Realms which will fix this

24b) I can't turn Adult Mode on (I forgot my password)

Open your DUKE3D.CFG in EDIT. There will be a line which says

ENVIRONMENT="whatever"

Change "whatever" to "" and when you load Duke Adult mode will no longer be
protected

24c) I can't turn Adult Mode on (I bought Duke in Australia)

See 24b. You may need a patch from www.3drealms.com

25) Where can I get some Duke maps from?

No. I don't really like Dukeworld. I just check it for the news and info. I
use ftp.cdrom.com for my downloads. I don't have any sponsors. I do this
because I like Duke. I don't think I should make money from someone elses
time and effort. Go on. Prove me wrong...

28) What's a TC?

A Total Conversion, is an add-on which changes certain aspects of the game,
such as graphics, weapons, monsters, sounds and levels. A good example of
this is the Duke In Black TC. A Partial Conversion, which is also called a
TC by most people, just changes SOME of the game. A good example of this is
the Penthouse Paradise level, where there is new art, sounds and levels, but
everything else stays the same

28b) How do you use TCs?

They usually come with a batch file. Compare the names of the new files with
the ones already in your DUKE3D directory to make sure none conflict, then
extract it to your Duke directory. Run the batch file then start duke. LOOK,
THEY USUALLY COME WITH INSTRUCTIONS! It is generally recommended to have two
copies of Duke installed as they tend to take over the whole directory.

29) Can someone help me get past the first level of Doom?

You need a lot of help if you can't do the first level.
Look, run straight ahead and through the door. Shoot the two bad guys and go
around and through the other door. Go across the pathway, open the final
door and go to the exit

If you really can't do it, then cheat

Find the passageway hidden behind the poster in one of the cells. If you
can't get to the cells, go to the rotating room and flick the two switches.
If you haven't got the red keycard, go outside. If you can't, get the yellow
keycard from the guarded room near the cells

31) I want the Atomic Crack so you don't need the CD in all the time

Open QBASIC. Put this in:

OPEN "DUKE3D.EXE" FOR BINARY AS 1

That's because it's a lot older, but it doesn't need a Pentium II 333 with a
3D
Graphics card and 240Mb of HD space either... How much fun can you have in
less than 27 Meg on a P100?

33) How can I play Duke over the Internet?

Use a program called ICommit

33b) What's ICommit?

Internet Commit is a program which alters your COMMIT.EXE file, so instead
of playing modem to modem, you play modem to IP number. This will not
overwrite your original COMMIT.EXE, so you don't need to back-up first. This
can be used to play any BUILD based game. That's Blood, Duke3D, Shadow
Warrior or Redneck Rampage

33c) How do I use ICommit?

Run the program and choose Config. Fill everthing in. You're going to need
some IP numbers... they change every time you connect unless you are on a
24-hour connection, so post a message at alt.games.duke3d asking for a game.
Choose either Host or Join and follow the instructions

34) I have a 486 and Duke runs terribly!

Get a Pentium 100 or higher. To play practically ANY of todays games
smoothly you need a faster processor... You can still play it with a 486,
but don't expect 30 frames per second!

34b) I have a Pentium 100 and Duke runs terribly!

Try reducing the size of the screen or the detail level

34c) I have a Cyrix and Duke runs terribly even in the low-res modes!

Ah! Cyrix processors are awful. That is why they are cheaper. A Cyrix 166 is
roughly equivalent to a Pentium 120

35) How do you extract the sounds/music/graphics from Duke 3D?

Make sure you copied KEXTRACT from the Build directory on your CD then type:

KEXTRACT DUKE3D.GRP *.VOC        for the speech and sound effects
KEXTRACT DUKE3D.GRP *.MID        for the music
KEXTRACT DUKE3D.GRP *.ART        for the graphics
KEXTRACT DUKE3D.GRP *.MAP        for the levels
KEXTRACT DUKE3D.GRP *.*          for everything

36) I can't play modem games. Either Duke can't find my modem or it won't
connect!

If you have a Winmodem, you're out of luck. They are really only useful for
Internet connection and just about nothing else....

37) When I try and install Duke it out in DC or DukeZone (500 levels) I get
a runtime error 200 or something

Yes. This is a problem with modern PCs. I'm not sure if the problem is with
the CPU being too fast, or with Windows 98 not working with some old games.
You may find that quite a few old DOS games won't work, such as Turrican 2
or Top Gun. Go to www.pacifist.freeserve.co.uk/slow.zip  . Once you have the
SLOW.EXE , put it in WINDOWS\COMMAND. Now, open a MS-DOS prompt in Windows,
switch to full screen and run SLOW two or three times. Try and install it.
If it doesn't work, run SLOW again, until it does work. It is important that
you run SLOW in a DOS prompt and not in plain DOS because it can't be
removed short of rebooting, but in Windows you can just close the prompt and
not run out of conventional memory

38) Where can I get the shareware version?
