The Liveware 2.x patch will fix most, but not all of the crash problems when
you run Duke in a DOS shell under Windows.

The crashes occur in Duke Nukem maps in sectors where the Reverb settings
have been altered, like the sewer in E1L2. As soon as you enter a sector
where the reverb settings have been changed, the game crashes. The real
blame goes to Windows and the way it handles hardware requests from software
running under DOS shells. (Like requests to changes your soundcards playback
settings)

The Liveware patch works by emulating reverb in software. On lower-end
machines this will cause a noticable performance hit. I tried the patch but
I don't think it's worth it. (I'm still using a P166 and I got at least a
20% framerate drop with the Liveware patch. Plus the patch is around 30
megs. Yikes!)

I have a Soundblaster Live and I don't have any problems running under
DOS-only with the original drivers. I still do most of my map design and
testing under a windows shell, since I don't add any reverb tags or MSFX
sprites to the sector. Also, most 3rd-party maps don't use reverb, either. I
only run Duke under DOS-only when I want to play with the built-in maps.
