SPOILERS When I got to the "crosshair" window in The Abyss, I saw the shrink ray and the tiny exit and figured "I need to be shrunk" and the red spot over the shrink ray was "obviously" a button I needed to shoot to get the shrink ray to fire. I must have spent ten minutes trying to hit the stupid thing with every weapon but the pipe bombs and the foot. I felt really stupid when I finally got closer to the shrink ray and saw the "button" was just another one of those red spots that were on the walls everywhere (and why did I think there would be a mechanical button in the side of a cliff?). Very clever bit of misdirection. And there were plenty of red spots around as "clues" that the spot was not a button. Of course, if you've saved your jetpack from the secret level, you don't need to bother with the shrinkray. Michael Straight prefers to save the jetpack for the boss, though.
