What's causing this error message?

I've just downloaded the shareware version of Duke3d v1.3 and I am
getting the following error message:

  Using .RTS file:DUKE.RTS
  Loading palette/lookups.
DOS/4GW Professional error (2001): exception 06h (invalid opcode) at

  180:0050A902

I am attempting to run the program on a 386 40HZ with 8MB of RAM. I
know this is below the minimum spec but I thought I'd give it a try.
Is it my spec that is causing the problem or is it something else? I
would appreciate any help or suggestions - apart from the obvious one
of up-grading my machine. :-)

Cheers
