I cant work out what's going on with doom. I have it installed on two computers, it runs no problem on one which has 620,016 conventional and 67,024 upper memory free yet comes up with a not-enough memory error when atttempting to run from one with 623,376 conventional and 83,696 upper memory free. Another difference is that the one it runs on has 8 megs whereas the one it doesnt run on has only 4. However, I dont think this can be the problem as reallocating memory from smartdrive doesnt solve the problem but messing around with the startup files does. The only other difference is that the non-working doom is installed on a doublespace drive whereas the working one isnt. Could this be the problem? Does doublespace occupy more memory running than idle? I'll try installing on a different drive tonight but if anyone can shed any light in the mantime, I'd be most grateful. I like my startup files as they are and really dont want to have to go hacking at them just for one game. Cheers Rich

DOOM uses a DOS extender. That means it doesn't care how much conventional memory you have. On the 4 megger, don't load smartdrv or any other high memory hogging device. Try it with only himem.sys and see where you get. -- Taylor Gautier -- ez00...@hamlet.ucdavis.edu ------------------------------------------------------------- *LANDFILLS SAVE ENERGY* "By covering depressions in the landscape, landfills make the surface of the earth smoother. actually, on my 486-33 I noticed significant smoothness increase by blanking my config.sys file completely, as opposed to leaving himem.sys in there. especially tested on level 2 or so of episode 3 (the one with all of the animated walls ... really slow with himem.sys ... smooth without.) .
