In MM and MM2--Memento Mori for those who don't recognize it--there are
a ton of hidden areas, especially in mm2. Question: how does one get
there? Are those for co-op play? Death Match only? even in MM1 I had
difficult finding all the hidden areas, and could not find very many
triggers that opened them up? Am I missing something??

Thanks

You could investigate the levels in a level editor. Be warned that this
takes just a bit of skill to master.

Well, I can just IDCLIP my way through the walls, too, but that seems
like cheating. :) I mean there must be a legitimate way of finding
these hidden areas and opening them up. Right?

Yes they are. MM & MM2 are _specifically_ designed for cooperative play
(unlike other major WADS where it may be an afterthought). The Innocent Crew
that produced them designed that way. Having said that there are not many
secrets that absolutely require a 2nd + person to expose them.

I have found on MM & MM2 that there a quite a few unreachable areas

Your best bet for finding the maximum secrets, single player is to download
the UV Max LMPs from Compet-N
as reveal the maximum reachable secrets single player. If it is not 100%, it
may be a cooperative secret (or bug).

You want

ftp://competn.doom2.net:8002/pub/compet-n/pwads/mm/max/
ftp://competn.doom2.net:8002/pub/compet-n/pwads/mm2/max/

To run them you need DOOM2 executable, 1.9 (not Final DOOM versions,
original DOOM2)

and make sure you have the most uptodate MM & MM2 which can be got here:

http://www.doom2.net/~compet-n/index.cgi?action=pwads
and click on "Memento Mori", "Memento Mori 2"

A level editor will tell you things like how a door is opened, what
a switch does, any walls to shoot, where the triggers are etc.
