Doom 3 has jerky graphics

I have a Dell Pentium 3 with a Winfast A1808B 3D-video card with 128MB ram (on the video card). When I try to play Doom 3, the graphics move jerkily instead of smoothly. What would be the fix for this? Does my video card need to be upgraded? Thanks!

Pretty difficult to really answer that, because it depends what you want to do with the machine. If you want to play Doom3, I would recommend an Nvidia 6600GT or 6800GT (about $150 and $275 respectively). Personally, I'm going to upgrade in a month or so, and going with an Nvidia 7800GT for about $375, which will get me through the next couple of years worth of new game releases. It pays to get more than you think you need now, to avoid having to keep upgrading so often. -- If you're not on the edge, you're taking up too much space. Linux Registered User #327951

You said you have a Pentium III. If I recall correctly, the PIII stopped at 1Ghz. The minimum recommended system requirements for Doom3 was a 1.5 Ghz P4, 384 megs of RAM and a 64 meg video card. I have the same problem.. Jerky Video I have a 2.1 Gig processor with 512 megs of ram and a 128 meg Radeon 9200 Video Card. The game calls for a min 64 meg card. I have twice that and it still rns jerky... I guess Im stuck until I can afford a 256 meg card.... I haven't seen any feedback on an actual fix.. Only suggestions to go out and spend more dough... The amount of memory isn't the biggest factor on a video card's performance. The GPU is. Again, the 9200 is pretty weak by today's standards. > I haven't seen any feedback on an actual fix.. Doom3 is quite scalable, performance to hardware, without giving up TOO much detail and quality. If you have middling level hardware, you can't expect to run the game with maxed out settings in higher resolutions and get smooth performance. I have a pretty good setup for running Doom3 at even Ultra quality settings with resolution at 1024x768. And, that's already a trade-off. UpsetChaps have a tweak guide for Doom3. You might want to have a look at that and follow their lead for the level of hardware you're using. http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/Doom3/Doom3Guide.htm Scroll down to 'Connection, framerate and Visual Tweaks' section. The whole guide was a help to me for getting it playing well on a 3.0E gHz P4, 1 gig of PC3200 in dual channel and Radeon 9800 Pro. My rig is a different one now, AMD A64 X2 4800+, 2 gigs PC3200 in dual channel, 6800 GT. Even with that, I can't run in Ultra Quality at 1280x1024 and get smooth gameplay throughout. McG. I have a comparable system (same RAM, 2.26GHz P4) with a 64MB Radeon 8500DV and it's playable. It's at 640x480, mind you, but I wouldn't call it jerky. And we had to walk uphill in the snow to get the shareware version on floppy disks! That right, diskettes! Uphill, both ways! Dan C is right. Your 9200 is too old and too slow. If you're on a budget, it runs fine at 1024x768 on a 9800 Pro but if you can afford it go for something more modern like an X700.
