Reading up on it, a regular A64, even 4000+, isn't good enough. AMD A64 X2 4800+. should be good for games. At this time, I think the AMD *IS* worth the money. McG.

I suppose that would be a good start. I can't imagine how that could be worth the money. If I had that I'd almost certainly need a $2500 monitor to go with it. Dual/multiple cores are the future. I'm just not ready for the future yet. -- "I don't feel tardy" Steve ¤»Inglo«¤ www.inglostadt.com

The recent AMD/Intel dual core stress test over at Toms Hardware. I've ordered the stuff I want. For right now, it will be a 939 mobo, AGP, nForce3 Ultra chipset, 2 gigs PC3200 and I'll use the lowly eVGA 6800 GT in it :) Steve, know what I'm gonna call it? My X-Box!!!! After the X2 of course ;) McG.

And it you get a 939 socket MB that also has Duel Core support it will take you even further with the whole x2 series. Even though there are some questions about the nForce 4 chip set, if I was looking to upgrade from a previous generation Intel or AMD chipset MB right now, that's probably the path I would take - maybe with an Asus A8N SLI Premium. That looks to be the most future proof at the moment, for both CPU and Video. So many choices - so little cash ;-) Bob

It seems that for the last several years, the worthwhile choice when upgrading has been a new mobo/cpu combination. I've had an Athlon XP 2500 and an nForce2 for 2 years now, while possible, while possible, it's never seemed remotely worth it to upgrade the CPU on it, there just isn't enough difference between (especially an overclocked) 2500 and a 3200. -- "I don't feel tardy" Steve ¤»Inglo«¤ www.inglostadt.com

I had the XP 2500 also, and it seemed like forever before the price on the 3200+ came down under 200, but I finally got one. You're right, the difference is small, especially if you had the 2500 overclocked, but it's noticable. And you can overclock the 3200 also, although probably not as far. I figured it was the fastest CPU I could get for this MB, so I might as well grab one before they disappear entirely. Bob

X2 4800+ and GA K8NS Ultra 939 mobo, NF3 Ultra chipset. $985 for the chip, $145 for the mobo. In a few months, I might pick up a PCI-e mobo and vid card. For right now, Far Cry 64 bit freakin ROCKS at 1280x1024 maxed out everything!!!! Installing DOom3 now.... McG.

I dig that. But I haven't built an AMD box since a K6-2 350/400! Going from the P4 3.0e with 2 gigs DDR400 to this X2 4800+ with 2 gigs DDR400 is like stepping up from a P3 933 to the P4 3.0E The P4 3.0E ain't a slouch by any means. I do above average for the CPU/Vid in the 3DMark benches. But this X2 slams it. Gotta go get some more games installed on it and run some benches! McG.
