Just after I waste the two big demons and get sucked into hell, doom
returns to the menu screen and won't continue. Any suggestions? I have
the latest drivers for my video card (Radeon 9600 mobile). The rest of
the machine is a Rock Xtreme notebook with 1GB RAM.

Try to disable Fast Write settings on your ATI drivers menu. Or try to 
Omega drivers (Fast Write is disable by default on them).

You do not lose speed while disabling this setting. I do not know why it 
is enable on ATIs driver. So many have problems with it.
