I am a little way into this game and I need to know how this heart thingy
works in gameplay. Can it be used as a weapon, like the Soulcube in D3?

Thanks

No, it gives you temporary powerup (helltime, berserker and invulnerability)
See the full weapon description at

Not quite a weapon. It's a power-up actually. But, it doesn't do
anything until you kill the first hunter. You'll encounter your first
hunter soon enough. Be sure to keep it charged so it's always ready.

Later in the game it will make easy work of the toughest baddies.

Too easy, IMHO. It might be more fun if you could only activate one at
a time, but with all 3 abilities (one for each hunter, for people who
haven't completed the game) going, it just makes things really easy. I
hardly used it, except when backed into a corner, because it tended to
make things really boring for me.

Yeah, that pillar room fight, with the fully charged artifact and a
couple of corpses in the room, you just get your fists out and take out
HK after HK and Mancubus after Mancubus. I was able to kill everything
but one Mancubus, which I nailed with a BFG round, and still found an
extra corpse to get 1 charge with.

I think a good option with the artificat would be that different power
sets take different number of charges, to use all three at once sucks
down all your charges to use everything but invulnerability uses two and
Helltime costs 1 charge.

Awesome tagline. :-) I stole it using TagZilla.
