Not on a localbus 33Mhz machine...

Yes, *IF* you are talking about a local bus machine. I was not. I was
talking about an ordinary ISA bus machine.

Besides, even with a cache and local bus, there is a limit to how fast data
can be read from a hard drive. Take the number of actual sectors per track,
take the platter RPM, do some simple division and you find out what the
PHYSICAL limit of the hard drive is. No cache in the world can make that
better.

I've read through all the articles here and it seems that no one
else is having this problem (that are talking about it anyway!). I
have a regular SoundBlaster (ver 1.5) and a 486/33 with a Tseng Labs
1 meg VGA card. The thing runs fine, and I get FM music, but no
digitized sounds! I've set the parameters correctly in the setup
and I've tried both three channels and one channel but not a peep...
anyone else having this problem? I've got 4 megs of memory...does
one need more to get the sounds?

I have the same problem. Except I have a SB comaptible. I too have 4MB of memory, but I don't think it has anything to do with that. I think its a bug/incompatibility with the program. Look out for the new releases of Doom, ver 1.2 etc. They promise better SB support. A lot of people have this problem with the sound FX, so you're not the only one.

Try checking to see if you have ANY card set to IRQ-2. Also, be sure your
video card's IRQ is *disabled* (if you have that option). I found that DOOM
doesn't seem to want ANYTHING on IRQ-2. Good luck.
