Why can't save googles/etc for later?

One thing that's a bit odd is that one gets goodies like invisibility 
AFTER fighting off a buncha guys - or the goggles AFTER stumbling around 
in the dark - or a computer map AFTER you've seen most of the level.  Ah 
well, life's sweet ironies.

It would be nice if you could activate suits, goggles etc. as you do the 
guns - when you need to.

Don't get me wrong, this is still the most astonishing game I've seen.
