Basically did all the usuall. Got the system down to a bare-bones situation,
even removed the sound card. Still random "pseudo lock-ups".

Pretty weird.

I've tried running it with and without himem.sys, same thing. I've tailored
config.sys down to just files=30, buffers=30, same problem.

The only thing autoexec.bat is loading is the mouse driver, thought about
changing that to a different version.

I've had problems with that DOS extender before. Lucas Art's Rebel Assualt
uses it, and they sent out a newer version than ID has given us. 

Hmmmm, guess I'm screwed for now.

Have you tried using the ALTDOOM.ZIP patches?  It replaces the version of the 
DOS extender, I think there are three or so different extender verions with it 
(providing you are using DOOM ver 1.1).
