O.K. here's this weeks lame question. I have tried Doom at a local
computer store and find myself nearly addicted. I have a mere 386dx40 is
this too slow to run this wild game?

I have a 386DX33 at home, and it crawls!

Nothing at all like the DX2/66 at work. :)

It sholdn't be, but you'll have to crank the screen size down a little
bit. I'd also consider the purchase of a math co-processor too!

I'll be running it on my 386dx25 soon, but I'm a psycho!

No problems here. I run a 486/25SX (almost identical speed to a 386/40) with
a slow 512k video card, and I can run in full screen smoothly enough to play
for hours without getting annoyed. Course you have to run in low detail but
who are they kidding, you don't even notice the diff between low and high
detail unless your sitting there staring at a picture on the wall or
something. IE. you don't notice the diff when your really playing.
I also ran it on the schools 386/25 with no difficutly. A little slower, but
not much. Both systems have 8 megs of ram, and I ran version .99.

Shouldn't be any problem as long as you keep it in low detail... and maybe
only let it mix 2 or 3 sfx instead of 4. (This sucks up a lot of cpu
time)...

I've got a 386dx40 also, and it is fine in low-res mode. In the high-res mode
I overcorrect with the joystick, so I've taken to using the keyboard for
movement, and the joystick for shooting.

The reason I stick to high-res is because I like the pretty pictures! Sure, the
movement is a little clunky, but I wouldn't do without the hi-res pictures!

I run it on a 386DX-40, and motion is a bit choppy on high detail. If
you can put up with low detail it's pretty fast. I often do that when
in combat for better response. F5 (I think) toggles detail. Like
mentioned previously, decreasing the screen size a bit also helps.

It should run fine. We have a 386dx/40 with 4 megs and various video cards(
trident, ATI, OAK). None of them is VLBus, and the game runs smooth with a
relitivily large screen(3rd larger?) and in high res. However, it REALLY
helps if you can load smartdrv.
