after getting norton utilities 7 i was experimenting with ncache and
noticed that it can run in conventional memory.
no matter what is in conventional memory doom will not show it in the
heap size. with ncache2 i can load a 180-200k cache that stops registered
doom from chopping a GREAT deal. doom was almost unplayable on episode 3
and now much easier. doom aparently needs about 340k of conventional memory
to run. i am using a 48633dxvlb with 4 megs.
i don't think smartdrv will make a conventional cache although that might be
wrong.
from my experience himem with emm386 cuts down the heap size a great deal
so a expanded cache is not a good idea. if himem.sys works then and
extended cache would might work ok. himem.sys crashes doom for me.

if you make the low dos cache too big doom will lock up upon loading the wad.

just some thoughts.
