Mag reviews?!?

Is it me, or is DOOM totaly shut out of all the popular game review mags?

I read all the current ons the day they come out, and Ive seen almost no
coverage on DOOM. I did read one small small paragraph explaining a little,
but nothing like all the other commercial games get.
Is this due to commercial games paying "kickbacks" to the game mags?
IMHO DOOM should be on the cover of at least one mag, if not for the games
play, at least for ID and what its done with the way people view shareware.

Yeah, I've been wondering the exactly same thing since the sneak preview in
the last July (?) issue of Computer Gaming World. I actually thought the
project was cancelled or something because I haven't seen anything after
that and I read every CGW issue. I was surprised when I went home (Finland)
during X-mas break and saw one of my friends playing it. I fell in love
with it and wanted to get it bad, but I still don't know where to get it
from. So far I've considered CGW the best game magazine but
this makes me wonder.

Sorry 'bout the sig :-]

I don't know much about magazine publication, but be aware that they
have to go to press weeks before you get them. Add in time for reviewing,
writing, submitting, editing, and layout.

I suggest waiting another month for the next issues before passing judgement.

I don't read game magazines regulary, but I picked one up in late november
(when the doom hype was at its top) and there it was. DOOM - the best action
game of 93 (!), even before it had been released. It was the leading swedish
gamesmagazine, "Attack", which is covering all "homecomputers" and their games.
I think it was kind of fun, that the DOOM hype was so great that it was
selected THE best action game of 93, when the editor had only seen a beta
release :-)

And of course I agree, it was the best game of 93, and maybe even 94? ;-)

Well remember that your typical glossy magazine (like CGW) has an
average lead time of 4-6 weeks. Somehow I kind of doubt there's a
conspiracy against shareware headed by commercial game makers :)

That is true, but there was a press release version of doom somwhere around
two months ago. It was a version with no sound, and only three levels.
But the boards were nearly as released, the game engine worked fine,
and they included a full range of cheat keys, screen capture keys, etc
for reporters/reviewers to use for their articles. There is no excuse
for not generating at least SOMETHING from this -- I mean this game is
revolutionary after all, you'd think the magazines would be just
clamouring for any little bit of coverage that they could come up with.

The UK mag PC Review has given DOOM away as a cover disk.
They give it an extremely good review. Best ever type thing.

It's just appeared on the front of PC Action here in Britain, and they rave
over it, calling it the best shareware game ever. They've also got it on the
coverdisk. What I'd like to know is how did they manage to get it all onto
one disk?? iD's own version on ftp.uwp.edu (and others) is in two 1.4Mb
files, and I've never seen a version that took up less than two disks. Any
idea about how they've done it?

I was surprised to see that Computer Gaming World, which is
probably the best magazine of its kind in the US, only gave it
a short blurb, like 2 column inches.

They do cover games before they come out. For example, indycar
racing got a large spread in prerelease.

There is a paragraph and screenshot of DOOM in February issue of CGW in
"Taking a peek" section. Perhaps there will be a review in a later issue.
CGW is one of the more serious, level-headed game magazines and is not likely
to go crazy over an action game (did they ever have a full review of W3D?).
They also don't like to base reviews on pre-release version of the game.
Expect greater coverage in video-game magazines which are more likely to be
impressed by DOOM.
