There's a switch somewhere nearby that I think you must throw (I forget 
exactly where) then you can just walk right through the flame wall. There's 
a teleporter behind it.

    Go to the wall of flame in question (I believe it's the northwest
corner of that room with the beating heart on the pedestal) and then
look back towards the pedestal with the heart.  Take the first door on
your left, and the switch is immediately on your right hand side to
raise the stairs.  I think it's there all the time, but maybe you have
to switch a switch somewhere else to get at it.  I don't remember
exactly.  Anyway, that's the switch which raises the stairs.
