Nothing.
Empty config.sys and autoexec.bat.
If you're using dos 6.x the you can hols down SHIFT while it boots to
prevent dos from proscessing those files (I think).

If you run DOS 6.x hold down the left shift key as DOS boots. Then run your
mouse driver if you use a mouse and then run Doom. That was the only way I
could get it to run with 4MB.

The only way I have found to set up my config.sys and autoexec.bat files
to work "well" with 4 Megs of RAM is to strip out all memory managers
and TSR's (except essential ones like the mouse driver if you use a mouse).
I also switched all my DOS default settings down to their minimums for
things like FCBS, Files, Buffers, Lastdrive, ect. There's also ways of
setting up Doom to run faster as well.

Has anyone out there gotten ID to tell them what exactly the "optimum"
memory configuration for Doom is? If so, would you please share?
