Hey does anyone know if there's a version of DOOM for the C64.

If so, how many tapes does it fit on?

There is. It was released yesterday.

Of course, little do you know that the awesome technological power of the
C64 allows it to use what may be the most powerful 160k 5 1/4" floppy drive
in the world (really! The disk drive is just as powerful as the computer!
They both use a 6502! Well, ok, the computer one is called a 6510, but
that's just a number. They're really the same thing) which means the game
only needs about 25 disks.

Using the symmetric multiprocessing power of the C64 (those smart disk
drives I was talking about) Doom manages an awe-inspiring .01fps with 1
floppy drive, and a mind-numbingly awesome .02fps with 4 of them!!!!

So... when can we expect Doom for my graphing calculator?

Now was that necessary? I mean, I know it's funny, but - hehehe -
nevermind, it WAS absolutly necessary!!!!!!!!!!

Don't be so sure there won't be... When Wolf 3d came out, our local C64
wizard started writing a 64 version. He never got around to the actual
gameplay, but the graphics engine was unbelievable...
The 64 seems to be the only platform where the games have been
steadily improving in speed and detail ever since it came out- on the
same hardware.

And the Atari 8-bit. They made a 3d tetris for it (haven't seen it,
but people say it's playable, which is a statement in itself)

do you know where I could download this graphics engine? you must have
saw it, you could probably tell me where I can find it. I assume he
wrote a small program tht allowed you to move around in a little virtual
area.

I disagree. I think this was true of all the major 8-bit computers. Apple ][
games also improved dramatically from 1978 when the first Apple ]['s came
out until 1990 when the entire software industry en-mass decided that the
days of the Apple ][ (and all 8-bits really) were over.

I think that in many ways the current situation in both the Mac and PC worlds
in which the hardware improves every six months or so and people are expected
to upgrade their computers every two years or so has bred lazy programming
habits...

Oh my God. How many tapes does it fit on!? Please tell me this is a joke
and that there isn't some poor sap out there who really thinks Doom would
ever run on a C-64... kinda makes you think tho... my first computer was
a Commodore Vic-20 with a wopping 4K of memory and a tape player. We
plugged it into the TV, and mostly I played "Gorf" and "Adventure" on it.
Now I've got a 486 with 8 meg. Its scary how far we've come in twelve
years...

It's already out! I saw it recently at MSU -- there was a high-speed
connection to the line printers and they were going like mad! They had
several hooked up - one for each view. It was only B/W but wow! And you
had to punch out cards indicating which way you wanted to turn (boy did
your arms get tired after awhile)! The sound effects were coming out of
a boom box (tuned to a non-station) that sat right next to the machine.
Put the PC speaker to shame!

C'mon! To be fair, remember that the C-64 does in fact have a disk
drive (the 1541). Okay, so the disk drive's as slow as the tape drive, but
it DOES have one.

And the version of DOOM for the C-64 is called "Pac-Man 3D"

Do you really think the posting was serious? Go back and look at it again.
The poster was obviously making fun of the recent flood of "Doom for Mac?"
threads running rampant through this group.

Oh, and the VIC-20 had 5K. Of course, ~1.5K of that was used as display memory.
If I had to count the number of times I had to go through my programs and strip
out all the spaces so I could have bit-mapped graphics...
