How to NetDOOM? (Yes, I checked the FAQ)

I understand that from reading posts in this group and scanning the FAQ that DOOM can be played over a network by just loading the IPX and 2 other drivers. But I thought I had also read somewhere else that this would only work for 2 machines connected together via something like thin ethernet. Is this correct, or can I link together as many as I want using just these drivers and ethernet cards and cabling? I'd like to set up a network to play DOOM with, but I can't exactly afford all of the expensive software! Please reply by email or posting. Talking to the screen won't work? Thinking real hard? Calling your mom and asking her to tell you for us? I just played netddom for the first time last night. WOW! play in a dark room next to the guy so you can do things like (Take this!). The view other player's view option is incredible! One thing though, the guys is the MIS IPX god for our company and his system wouldn't work. Apparently DOOM pushed his board in a way not normally pushed and it didn't work. But switching to a new machine it, worked fine. Things we learned: The socket must be the same between players. The # of players must be correct. Pick differnt sockets if it doesn't work. Switch cards until it does. Get IPX working first, though all you have to do is type IPX at the prompt (providing you have IPX). BTW DOOM on his Dx33 with Local Bus Video was incredible. And he thought he had tweaked his 386dx enough (it can be done, become a cmos god), now I spoiled him.... -- Later, ZOT z...@crl.com Osborn's Law: Variables won't; constants aren't.

How could I go about playing Doom across internet between two PC's, each with their own IP address?? -- Another Mindless sig: "If you think health care costs too much now, wait until you see how much it costs when it's free." P.J. O'Rourke.

Yeah, from what I understand, many of the ethernet cards come with their own IPX drivers. You really don't need a full blown NOS to have doom up and running for network play... Al

Is this : correct, or can I link together as many as I want using just these drivers and : ethernet cards and cabling? the following is a batch file that loads up all of the drivers that you need to run NETDOOM on a thin ethernet network which uses NETBIOS instead of Novell. The problem that you'll run into is that you have to find a Novell driver for your card first off. I have 2 Artisoft AE-2 cards that use NETBIOS and I had hell figuring out what I even needed. Anyhow, most cards (especially anything NE2000 compatible) have drivers out there that will work. Mine came from some 'fsp' site (a friend of mine snagged them for me) and were put together by Crynwyr Software. (they write a lot of network drivers). here it is: @echo off nwlanguage=english lsl ne2000 0x60 15 0x360 (int_vector_#, irq#, card_iobase_address) pdether ipxodi setup the only one that will change for you is the NE2000.com driver, replace that with the ipx driver for your particular card. (the ipx driver is the novell driver. Note for all lantastic/lan server users, if you want to play net doom now, this will work for you, but you have to boot without any of your normal network drivers installed...these are Novell drivers and will conflict with your network drivers and will lock up your machine. If i can ever get onto ftp.uwp.edu to d/l the new patch for DOOM, i'll upload all of the above drivers and a read.me file with it. Rich/Hotblack

I DON'T have Novell, I use Little Big Lan, so all these helpful tips with respect to Novell/Netbios, etc. did me no good. Here is how I was able to make it work, using only freely available software: ne2000 -n 0x60 15 0x300 (Crynwyr [aka Clarkson] Packet Driver] ipx (From the ipx92.zip) I have NOT been able to get the suggested pdether (PDIPX103.ZIP) to work, no matter what combination of -n or -i switches I used.
