Net Doom on Lantastic

The other night a friend of mine and I tried to set up Doom for net play
over an existing and operational ethernet link, using lantastic, between
two 486 machines (a server and a client). We were trying to set up
lantastic to use IPX since net Doom requires it, but had problems getting
lantastic configured correctly. Has someone been able to run net Doom
using lantastic? Could you post your startnet.bat file or any other
information on how you set up your PCs/network to get net Doom working?

Thanks,

Juan Ardura

I am also being deprived of net doom. Could somebody please post
their config.sys, autoexec.bat, and startnet.bat. Also, could
you inform us as to where you got the drivers for the card, etc?
Any information would be appreciated.

I and a friend both have two machines and both use Lantastic to network
them. Lantastic alone is not enough. Ideally, you should NOT load up
your network. What you need to do is get the following:

Fine DOOMSER.ARJ (It has 90% of the drivers you will need).
it's startnet.bat loads the following:
LSL you needs this for link support
ETHERSL replace this file with the right one. *
PDETHER you need this one, too.
IPXODI The IPX driver.

* The "Right" program is one that is specific to your card. If you have a
Novell Ne2000 compatible card, the driver will be NE2000.COM

One place to find drivers is Novell.com. Another (Oddly) is Qdeck.com

Your cards should've come with the appropriate drivers to run ipx. That
is if they say novell certified or compatible or whatever. So, don't run
the lantastic (lantastic has *nothing* to do with IPX which DOOM uses)
net and load up the drivers for ipx. That's it.

As has been stated, do NOT load LANtastic (i.e. do not call your
STARTNET.BAT file). I've got it working just fine here with one
small problem which I will describe below. I have the NodeRunner 2000
cards from Lantastic, which come with a driver disk that has all the
files you'll need. If you have one of these cards, look in the NETWARE
(I believe) directory of your driver disk. Copy those files to your hard
disk (I put them in C:\LANTASTI\NETWARE). I made a batch file called
IPX.BAT which loads these files in the right order, which is: 1) LSL.COM,
2) NRODI.COM, and 3) IPXODI.COM. If you don't have a NodeRunner,
substitute your card's ODI driver for #2. That's it. Load those files
and enjoy NetDOOM!

One small problem: After exiting the net game and trying to restart, I
get an "Open socket" message and NetDOOM will no longer run. HOWEVER, I
have found that by unloading IPXODI, then reloading it, this problem is
solved. It's only a minor inconvenienve. I have a REIPX.BAT that does
this for me (runs IPXODI U, then IPXODI). The bigger inconvenienve is
having to leave DOOM at all just to restore a game. Even worse is when
DOOM just WON'T restore a net game... oh well. It's still even more fun
than single player DOOM.
