Has anyone tried Doom (especially the registered levels) on a Pentium w/ a PCI bus yet (fullscreen mode, of course)? I'm curious what it would look like... or is Doom the smoothest it can be on a 486DX2-66 already? -Tim

I haven't run it on a 486 yet, but it looks quite fine on a 60MHz Pentium with PCI Matrox MGA-II display card in full screen mode. -- - john romkey ELF Communications rom...@ELF.com

I've run DOOM on both a Pentium 60 and a 486 66 from Gateway 2000. The 486 had a vesa local bus ATI GUP and the Pentium had an ATI PCI bus ATI GUP. The pentium was really not much faster (maybe 20%) but I didn't have time to do any speed tests using the developer mode dots at the bottom of the screen. Basically it ran wonderfully on both machines! -- ----------- Neal Kettler < ket...@beethoven.cs.colostate.edu > ----------- The wise man can pick up a grain of sand and envision a whole universe. I didn't test it out w/the dots, but I would say I have played my share of DOOM. -- Taylor Gautier -- ez00...@hamlet.ucdavis.edu ------------------------------------------------------------- *LANDFILLS SAVE ENERGY* "By covering depressions in the landscape, landfills make the surface of the earth smoother. Taylor Gautier <ez00...@othello.ucdavis.edu> said something about PCI/Pentium/Viper for Doom, and mentioned the little dots seen on the bottom left hand side of the screen when -devparm is used: As I said in an earlier post, I really thought my friend's 486-80 (pushed 66) VLB was faster than Gateway's Pentium PCI/Viper offering. I didn't test it out w/the dots, but I would say I have played my share of DOOM. At this point, I posted a two line question, because I didn't (and still don't) know what the dots represent. Nathan Pritchard <nat...@owlnet.rice.edu> spent many more lines flaming me because "what does the response have to do with the quoted message?" So, if anyone _can_ see what my reponse has to do with the quoted message, could you please post or mail me on the signifigance on those little dots? Thanks, and kill a muncher for me! -- jo...@wpi.edu - WPI Computer Science |Linux 0.99.14f:Free 32 bit OS for the i386

Hehehe. You weren't outa line, and I thought I'd just let ya know, I have no idea. Judging by the posts I have seen, it is some way of telling your fps. The dots at the bottom of the screen refer to the amount of sound output at the time (I would call this volume, except that the level of the dots doesn't change if you change the volume output from your sound card using the options from the main menu). This is why those little dots go up and down during the title screen and why they go way up when you do such things like blow up a barrel or open a door. David Simpson

It's the current frame rate the game is producing. The slower your computer, the more graphix calculations it's doing, the further the dots move to the right. -- Carl A. Merritt <brom...@rahul.net>
