Authetic Doom multiplayer?

I'm looking to play Doom online in a fairly authentic way, staying as
close to the original multilayer as possible.

I have tried both Skulltag and Zdaemon. I currently use Zdaemon as it
seems to be a more pure experience. However I sometimes find the large
number of players that most servers have a little to0 hectic to be
enjoyable and would prefer 4 - 8 player games.

So I was wondering, are there any other fairly straightforward ways to
play Doom online, or are the above source ports my best options?

Thanks
