D3 weird graphic artifact

After selecting medium graphics settings and making changes to
the config file (disabling bloodeffects,projectilelights, enabling
skipvieweffects, ignorehighquality and usecompression) I get an
artifact where characters (npc's) look like they have a vertical
straight line right down the middle if you face them directly,  and
the left side will be darker than the right side.  Does anyone know
what causes this artifact?

P4 2.8 E,  1gb ddr ram,  fx5700 video card 256 mb with version 61.77 
drivers,  WinXP with directx 9b installed.
