They don't ALWAYS get away with it. Lots of news out there of people
getting busted. AND the crime is not "so called". Piracy is illegal,
whether you're caught or not. Too many people and too much money would
be spent tracking down all the people who get a copy of some software
off of a friend.

The biggest "pirates" are companies and industry. They copy the
software and do multiple installations instead of paying the huge
licensing fees for some of the bigger applications - which can cost
hundreds of millions per year. THESE are the ones that the cops go
after, they're bigger profile, worth a lot more money per investigation,
and they HAVE to have the licensing paperwork, or they're toast.
Another item, and the bigger software vendors will agree, the majority
of the people who pirate the software wouldn't be using the software to
begin with if they had to pay for it initially. In the end, they aren't
"losing" anywhere near as much money as they claim. They want to scare
people into paying exorbitant prices for fat software packs. Don't get
me wrong. I'm not condoning it, that's just what their own market
research comes up with.
Laissez faire? Mes oui. C'est la vie.
