Like nicolas said you'll have to make sure the 256 x128 pixel picture
is in the 256 color palette that DOOM uses for textures. NWT is trying
to convert it but it probably isn't too effective, if at all.
Converting an existing picture usually results in some color loss, and
you often need to touch up some parts that don't look right, but many
programs have decent palette-applying methods. You can use programs
like Paint Shop Pro, or (if you rename the palette extension) The GIMP,
to apply the palette found here:

Some WAD managing programs, like DeuTex and XWE will try to convert the
colors into the DOOM palette more or less intelligently. You might want
to give them a try, though you might want to extract the graphic after
it's been converted, to touch it up. XWE also allows you to edit a
picture pixel by pixel while its in a PWAD (WinTex will do it too,
calling Paint or some other external program.)
