RoE: more thoughts...

Finished playing RoE and I'm well on my way through it again. In a
nutshell: short but very sweet

It has everything I liked about D3 but with none of the tedium. As they
say, the dosage makes the poison.

Half-Life 2 is a wonderful game, but it's D3 and RoE that take up where
Black Mesa left off for those of us who enjoy the creepiness of an
extremely remote setting. OK, I'm a sucker for the hum of machinery and
moody lighting.

The artifact weapon seems pretty well integrated. (Although the
"invulnerability" feature didn't appear to render me truly invulnerable.
I was definitely taking damage.) I didn't use it as much as I could have.

The grabber makes light work of a roomful of lost souls, trites, or any
other small plentiful annoyance. Does anybody use the pistol anymore?
And with a little practice, one can easily dispatch imps, cacoes and such
by sending their own crud back at them. I found many of my other weapons
going unused. I'm not sure that's a good thing but I'll have to play in
veteran mode to find out.

The boss fights are typically frustrating and almost arcade-like. Maybe
I'm just not much on boss fights as they seem to break up the flow of the
game for me. But I'm in heaven fighting hoards of non-bosses. Maybe it's
a multi-tasking thing.

Speaking of arcade games, the slight sprinkling of in-game games brings
the whole thing up a notch. I found myself seriously into plaything the
Breakout-style game for a few moments - surrounded by blood and carnage -
and then snapping out of it and getting back into the "real" game.

And then there's Dr. Elizabeth. Red hair, freckles, and an interesting
space suit. Unlike our commander in D3, she was far more prompting to
move the action along. She was more like Doyle in FarCry. "OK, the
reactor is shut down. Now move on to...." Oh... and she believed I would
come through. 'Nuff said.

So what's with the big goons that look like they have dental charts for
teeth? Seriously. I was in "artifact" mode and punched one of those
dudes, and in slow motion I watched its "snout" flop back and forth like a
spring. Bizarre. Did this slip past somebody at Nerve?

Well...off to bed.
