Same problem here - my inspiron 9100 freezes randomly whenever I run
doom 3 ... looks to me like the graphics card (radeon 9700) has a
problem with some open gl based games b/c same thing happens when I
play kotor too

I found a bios update on dell's website , all it requires is to create
a bootable floppy and then restart the machine and boot from that
disk... which is somewhat ironical b/c my inspiron didnt come with a
%$%Y^@ floppy!

to get the updates goto:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&~ck=mn

if you figure out a way to install the bios update and it works for you
plz say how

thx
