My sys:
1Gb Ram
256Mb Radeon9600XT
2.2GHz P4

I found the game to be a little 'choppy' on the higher settings (not the Top
settings but plain old 'high quality').
I then had a little look around and found this:

http://www.megagames.com/news/html/pc/doom3enhancetheexperience.shtml

or http://tinyurl.com/4zxxz (if it didnt wrap above)

By changing the DoomConfig.cfg file in the \base folder, you can specify to
use more Ram for the game to run certain processes.

There is also (slightly more complicated) a way to decompress the files
(sound. videos, textures etc) so that the game doesnt have to decompress
them itself during gameplay.

So I followed the instructions, and put it on 'Ultimate Quality' level to
test it... and sure enough! It runs glitch -free! I can even have 3-4
enemies on screen at a time, and no slow down (yet).

Heed the disclaimer regarding Multiplayer mode not letting you play on Pure
Servers though! Back-up everything first and you should be able to overcome
that though.
