The Athlon 64 3000+ is only around $160, the 3200+ around $210, the 3400+
around $290, the 3500+ around $350. The FX-53 at about $800 is expensive,
but the 3500+ and a motherboard is less than what people pay for a 6800
Ultra card.

The 6800 GT is a great chip. Your cpu is a probably a bottleneck for it,
especially in Doom 3. Notice on the link I gave that the fps doesn't drop
much for the XP chips as the resolution increases. That is the clue that the
cpu is holding back the  6800 Ultra graphics card from achieving its
potential. The small change when resolution increases is probably
similar for the 6800 GT.

The XP 2500+ is a great chip for business software, but doesn't
really have the muscle to run demanding games as well as the
Athlon 64 chips.
