I experience the same "fade to black" problem. Actually, what happens
is that I'll be playing Doom 3 anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes and at
one point during that time the game freezes for a few seconds. When
the game unfreezes, all surfaces in the game become black. By all
surfaces I mean: my weapon, my hand, the walls, floor, crates, doors,
enemies. The only thing that does not become black are the lights in
the ceiling. The game is unplayable. When you re-load the game,
everything is fine, but eventually the surfaces will become black
again.

I think the problem is related to overclocking of the CPU or GPU or
maybe just a hardware conflict.
