The uniform criticism the game is getting revolves around a few issues; it's dark, you have to cycle that stupid flashlight, the lighting is all out of whack, the monsters jumping out are predictable and it's the old find your way through the maze to the next maze, etc, etc... After playing only 20 minutes, I've already known before hand that a monster was going to be lurking in a particular dark spot and merely turned off the flashlight, strafed over to the corner and let loose a load of buckshot only to be rewarded by shredding the flesh of the lurking zombie. Surely this is not what Id intended. Did they really want to telegraph where all the monsters are hiding? Who knows. Id seems to be more in the game engine business than game business these days. Folks who have played Farcry and Painkiller have been treated to great gameplay and have seen the FPS genre advanced and the bar being raised in ways the Id probably never thought about. Doom3 is kinda boring to me. I'm playing it with my 13 year old and tried some of his saved games where he has cheats enabled. I'm seriously considering enabling them on my saved game, it's somewhat satisfying to have some freaking firepower when 80 spiders come _walking_ around the corner to get you. It's a little tedious to dispatch 80 spiders without a rocket launcher... > Sure some stuff could be different, some things could even be better. But > this is the new standard for PC games. The one game that does "scare" me is America's Army. There is a game that really forces you to emotionally invest yourself in it. The tension is real and palpable. One mistake and either you, a team mate or both of you sit out till the next round. Sometimes I don't play it right away because I'm just not ready to be immersed into that strained atmosphere, I have to be ready and in the right state of mind to play. Doom3 has no special emotional involvement for me.
