Sorry you're having problems getting the game to run.  Not to brag, but I
just finished the game start to finish without a single hang or crash.
Looking at your system specs, the main difference between your system and
mine is really the motherboard and video card.  You might double check the
drivers (or BIOS) on them.

My system:
Windows XP Home Edition
Intel D875PBZ motherboard and 512 megs Corsair DDR3200 LLPT memory.
Intel Pentium IV 3.0E GHz Prescott processor
nVidia/PNY geForce 4 Ti4400 AGP card
(yeah, I need to upgrade this to 6800GT, but it works for now -- 19.6 fps
timedemo demo1 1024X768 Medium Game Settings).
ViewSonic G220fb 21" flat screen CRT monitor.
Maxtor 80gig SATA

Another thing I do often is run Ad-Aware and Spybot.  Spyware and Adware
will steal system's resources and crash applications.
