Fear not, this is not the case!

This is a "Quick fix":

Be sure to have the doom.wad (or doom2.wad) in your ZDooM directory -
I assume you already do if you're playing the 'standard' maps.

Make a shortcut to ZDooM on the desktop area. Right-click, choose
"properties". In the "shortcut" sub-folder, choose "target" as ->

[Folder of ZDooM]\zdoom.exe -file [folder of WAD you want to
play]\[name of WAD]

Example: You have ZDooM in C:\games\zdoom, the WAD you want to play
is located in folder c:\wads\doom2\ and is named example.wad.

You should write ->

C:\games\zdoom\zdoom.exe -file c:\wads\doom2\example.wad

And save. Now double-click the shortcut, and you're launched. This is
good if you're planning on playing a specific WAD during a long
period of time.

The important thing is: all command line options available for
doom/doom2 are available for zdoom (with possibly a few exceptions).

So you can, for example, jump directly to the map of choice by to the
text above adding the -warp command.

Good luck,
