None net game -> net game?

Is there a way to have a one person game become a multi-player session?
For example if player x plays by himself to some point, saves his game, then
wants others to join in with him. Can he copy his game to the other pcs and
then use -loadgame and -net to play it? Same question applies to can a 4
player session become a 2 player session and vice versa?

Any tricks to boost network performance? My best speed is using
straight ipx.com and no netx. Ipxodi causes a slowdown also, even if it is a
newer novell network transport.
