Just to give you a little suggestion (from my own experience)...
If you have 4mb ram and are using dos 6.2(MS is what I'm using and
I dont't know about PC or DR) you should do a reboot and hold down
the LEFT SHIFT key to get a clean boot. DOOM takes control of your
system and doesn't need (OR LIKE) anything. No mem mgrs, disk cache
or anything. It allocates it's own memory(I think). As you have 4mg
(the min) I feel it's better to let DOOM handle it. Of course if
you are a mouse/keyboard player you will have to CD to your mouse
DIR and load your mouse and then CD to your DOOM DIR. This way you
should be able to run DOOM from DOS without the Win overhead and
DOOM can take care of memory (it doesn't care if you have anything
high or low it looks at ALL [(except expanded)(correct me if I'm
wrong)(so make sure that all you memory is configured as
EXTENDED)] memory and does its' best.
If you need to load your sound card also I'm not sure how to do
that. I have SBPro and even though I do a clean boot I still get
sound and efx without haveing to load it. Maybe it's becouse I
INSTALL DOOM while in my regular configuration and then play with
a clean boot.(something to do with default.cfg?)
I'm not trying to flame Win ( as I've been trying to write a PIF
myself just for the fact it should be able to be done and there are
times that I want to play "a few" but don't want to have to hassle
with: exiting, reboot, play, quit, reboot, cd/windows, win, but as I
noted earlier DOOM DOES NOT like anything hampering it's control
[kind of like the game =0:)].
Sorry for the longwinded response, but...
