Any help on DOOM Hanging?

I have a problem on DOOM in that when I save my game, seconds later the 
machine is frozen completely. I did a clean boot, no SMARTDRV or anything.
I have 8 megs of memory...does a certain amount need to be available low...
or high? Doesn't work with or without Smartdrv installed. Thought that might
be it because of the hanging upon saving a game.
