Stuck on Strafe

I got a copy of doom and installed it and it ran beautifully. Needless
to say after a week of solid doom addiction I had finished. I then went
back and played a few lower levels.
Anyway the next week a friend tries to use the same copy on the same
computer and it was stuck on strafe mode, ie cant turn-only run
sideways.
So we deleted all directories and reinstalled it from the original.
Still not working.  So I delete doom and intall Wolfenstein 3D in the
same disk, bingo it works great. Install doom again and again it doesnt
work.
I have manipulated all the default key files to turn strafe off but it
still doesnt work.

Please help a frustrated addict.

P.S. we also obtained the full version of doom but it would not even
work at all. ie not install properly
