Yes, you most definately should switch to a mouse. That is, a hybrid of mouse and keyboard. The mouse allows instant turns and pinpoint accuracy when aiming. Joystick and keyboard limit your turn rate and precision. >If a mouse or trackball or 'pad is the answer, what key assignments? Your picks can vary, but key to utility here is to have the forward movement handled by a key and steer with the mouse. Id suggests the right button for forward, I prefer a keyboard key so I can reserve the right button for strafe. This allows instant dodging of incoming fire with a press on the right and a quick sideways movement of the mouse. I then assign run to <alt> and forward to <,> and keep space for use/open... the period may suit you better than the comma it's up to you. But anyway, you never need lift your fingers from their key assignments this way, and you don't need to paw at the mousepad to walk/run. The other keys such as strafe left etc are unneeded with this setup and I just reassign them out of the way somewhere. Three keys, one mouse, two mouse buttons.
