 ^^^^^^^^^^
Like you've said, "shareware" is a principal, not necessary a policy or set
of rigid regulations. If you read VENDOR.DOC that accompanies the shareware
version, it clearly states that anyone wanting to sell this version should
contact id software first for written permission. The shareware principal
does allow for the author to put down whatever stipulations he/she wants. It'd
be silly for someone to release work as shareware and lose all rights to it
allowing the software to be done with whatever someone else feels like.

As far as the impression I got from id software, they're only interested in
looking up folks who are selling the shareware version for a rediculous
price (I suppose that's a vague term, but that was all that was said).
