I didn't say 40MB was a reasonable amount of memory for everyone. I used
NEXTSTEP on a machine with only 8MB for over year. However for what I use
computers for now 40MB is "reasonable", or a little on the low side. :-)

I have used NEXTSTEP to Edit 20MB files and Play/Edit up to 65MB sound files.
I don't know how well that would work on OS/2 with 8MB, but with NEXTSTEP its
a lot faster with 40MB instead of 8MB.

Every day I compile megabytes of source code while the computer sends/receives
e-mail and faxes, and while I have it running at least 5 other programs. My
time is worth some money to me. 32MB of RAM only cost me $1,200, which is well
worth the amount of time/frustration it saves me. Some of us would rather
"piss" away a little money than a LOT of time.
