| Oh yeah, it really screams??? From the reviews I've read it barely runs on a
| 16 mb machine, has little software available for it, but does sport a spiffy
| interface!
|
| I personally don't think it 'kicks anything else' as far as speed goes

Gee, Scott. I don't think Ray mentioned anything about speed.

NeXTstep is, quite simply, one of the best, most amazing object-oriented
development environments available on the market today. I'm getting a
NeXTstep/Intel box myself here within a couple of days, and I'm notoriously
picky about what sort of systems I'll actually buy.

NS does have some disadvantages---it does require a lot of memory, and there is
little software available (and most of what *is* available costs a lot)---but
its advantages are astounding. We aren't talking MS-DOS, Windows, or even
Windows NT. We're talking a full-featured Mach-based Unix, a multiwindow
display system utilitizing PostScript for imaging, a range of objects, a
built-in WSYIWYG editor, a compiler (C, C++, Objective C) in a complete
visually oriented development environment, and . . . well, all the things that
Unix is. Multiuser. Reasonably portable source code.

The lack of software isn't so bad; it's so easy to write software on the NeXT
that . . . well, it's almost embarrassingly easy. And because of a package
called SoftPC, you can run most PC software (okay, slightly slower than under
DOS) anyway.

NS is amazing. Don't knock it too badly. After all, even Windows NT barely
runs in 16MB of RAM. :)
